Early in 2007 an approach was made to the band by Mr.David Oliver, Chairman and a Director of Bebington Dramatic Society (BDS). He was inquiring into the viability and constraints of producing "Brassed Off" using our band (Port Sunlight Lyceum Brass) to play the part of "Grimley Colliery Band". After a series of meetings David took the decision to go ahead with the production. Further meetings took place, the cast began rehearsing and the band began rehearsing the music.
The "band" members of the cast visited the band room for instruction with their respective instruments and sat in with the band whilst playing the appropriate music.
"Danny" (Eric Lewis), and "Harry" (Neil Horn) received individual tuition for conducting, and "Gloria" (Gemma Langerhuizen) tuition in the Flugel Horn.
Rehearsals then took place in February '08 in the Gladstone Theatre, Port Sunlight, Wirral, where the production was to be staged, this being the resident theatre of BDS.
Tuesday 26th.Feb. took us to the Dress Rehearsal prior to the first night on Wednesday 27th.Feb. This performance was taken as a charity evening by the Handicapped Children's Pilgrimage Trust.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday saw the Cast and Band in top form form playing to a full house on all three nights.
Many expressions of thanks and enjoyment have been given to both cast and band from the audiences.
This has been a challenging production and cast and band met this challenge so well under the direction of David Oliver.
The band expresses their thanks to BDS for inviting them for this role, and for their first class acting, the stage manager and his team, all the back stage team, lighting , sound, props, and all involved.
The band expresses their thanks to David for his expert direction and co-operation.
It has been a pleasure for the band to take part, to make new friends, and to be involved with such a succsessful production.
